Former UDP leader Shyne Barrow is about to lose his diplomatic passport, with the diplomatic visa. 7News has confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested that he turn in the passport since he is no longer a member of the National Assembly. Members of the National Assembly automatically receive a "C3" Type diplomatic visa.
We understand that Barrow has been called by staffers at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and been directed to turn in the passport. But reports from the government indicate that he has shown some resistance to this and so far has not complied.
And while it is not outlandish to request that he return it - it's also unusual since the Government of Belize has many diplomatic and official passports floating around and in the hands of persons who no longer have an official status - or may have never really had it, and little if anything is done to recover them. Regardless of who makes up the government of the day, those passports are viewed as choice political plums for the well connected.
But, in Shyne Barrow's case - we get the sense that it's viewed as a kind of trophy for hawks in the current administration - who - reports tell us - are pushing hard for him to be forced to turn it back in immediately.
Up to newstime, Barrow did not answer our request for comment.
