And that might be among the last big investigations that the commissioner works on - because, it seems his minister Kareem Musa is trying to push him out. On Friday, Williams received a harsh letter from the CEO for Home Affairs Sharole Saldivar. She gave an outline for him to leave office and instructed him that he is supposed to act only in a caretaker role. That means he's not supposed to effect any transfers, promotions, structural changes or major policy decisions. It also tries to lay out a timeline for his departure - even though the Minister had told us that only the Prime Minister can dictate that.
From the phrasing of the latter, it is clear they're trying to push him out - but the problem is that both the Compol and the CEO are section 107 officers - meaning he does not see her as his superior, and today he made that clear:
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I will only say that the CEO has no authority to write such letter. I have not seen it but if that is so she has no authority. My appointment comes from the Governor General and so only the Governor General can alter the terms of my authority as Commissioner of Police or the Prime Minister. So that is all I'm going to say in respect to that. In terms of my timeline I have advised the Cabinet Secretary that I want to leave as quick as possible. It's a matter of the cabinet secretary and the prime minister working out my exit package. And once that is done then I am prepared to leave. I am excited about going to take over my new role. I believe it is going to be something good for me, a new opportunity for me to be able to go and apply myself with a view to see how I can continue to contribute to the safety of this country. So, tell Jules Vasquez let his heart not be troubled. I will leave very shortly."
