It's been the biggest news this week - Compol Chester is moving on. And when he confirmed Wednesday that today would be his last day - well, it got a lot of social media traction - and let's just say, not all of the comments were bouquets from well wishers.
Constable Barry Flowers- legally known as Barrington Mai - is one of the commenters that went to town on his outgoing boss, calling him a bully and other more colorful put downs.
And his comments caught the commissioner's eye. So much so that he made a formal complaint saying that Flowers was cyber bullying him. The complaint says that on Wednesday while he was browsing his Facebook Account, he noticed a post by 7 News Belize and noted Flowers comments about him. The facts presented in court say that the Compol found it "obscene and a clear attack on his character and reputation and were made to publicly ridicule and embarrass him."
Flowers was arrested on Thursday and his cell phone was confiscated and labelled as exhibit in the case against him.
This morning, he appeared unrepresented in Magistrate's court where he pleaded not guilty and received bail of $5,000. His next court date is June 4, 2025.
So what's the background? Well, the Compol recently allowed Flowers, who is a former corporal to re-enlist, but as a constable. That didn't go down well, and from last week he had been making some very nasty social media comments against the compol - who is his boss. Williams told us he called in Flowers and verbally cautioned him, but he still went ahead on Wednesday of this week piling on the insults - and that's when he decided to bring criminal charges.
We note that this is the second person within a month that the commissioner has brought cyber bullying charges against - the other was a civilian, Nichole Mcdonald in early March.
