Last week we told you about the multi agency government statement on the Cayo Rosario Project. They did all they could to ally citizen concerns that the development will cause serious environmental damage.
Well, it didn't work. The townspeople of San Pedro have announced a PUBLIC MEETING to, quote, "discuss the ongoing dredging and mangrove destruction happening around the island, and plan the way forward to defend the Cayo Rosario flats and its marine reserve."
We asked the minister for a comment on the meeting today and here's what he had to say.
Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development
"I think that the people who are looking after Cayo Rosario have a right to speak out and if they are dissatisfied with the way things are going then it is their right. Many times from the department of environment you might issue a release saying certain organisations or owners have been given environmental clearance but these clearances also come with conditions so the department has to have the personnel. Well many times we do not have the personnel really out there for each particular development project to be looking after it on a daily basis, so when you see something going on then by the time you know it may be two or three days after and so then you have to go out there and see what's happening. I think the Department of Environment has capable staff that will be out there and see what's happening and if the group that is doing the supposed damage is out of order then we will be able to put a stop order to that."
The Meeting starts at 7:00 pm tomorrow night at the Lion's Den in San Pedro Town.
