10 Hours Of Outages On San Pedro, BEL Says Equipment Was Contaminated
posted (April 8, 2025)
Just a small sprinkle of rain yesterday threw San Pedro's power supply into disarray.

For 10 hours, San Pedro Town experienced a series of power outages. It began around 6:30 last night and it wasn't until 4:30 this morning that the situation was remedied. According to a press release from BEL, the primary cause was, quote, "light rain mixing with excessive dust and salt contamination at our substations, equipment, and supporting structures, causing "tracking." This means electricity leaks from the energized equipment to the ground, causing electrical faults and outages." End quote.

A release says The San Pedro Fire Department assisted in washing the structures and equipment at the substation to remove the contamination. BEL will continue to wash and maintain the other equipment over the next few days since they suspect that it has been impacted by severe contamination. They advise that this may require short outages to ensure the safety of the technicians.

The San Pedro Gas Turbine was also brought online to support the demand for power.

We note that there were also outages in villages in the Cayo district.
