Fire Starts At Abandoned Building, Spreads To Family's Home
posted (April 8, 2025)
A family living in an apartment on Hunter's Lane lost their home after a fire that began in the abandoned building next door spread to theirs. The fire happened on Sunday but much like the fire on Castle Street last month, this one might have been caused by squatters, one of whom is reportedly mentally challenged. Station officer, Gladstone Bucknor, told us more.

Gladstone Bucknor, Station Officer, Belize City NFS
"Both stations responded, three trucks arrived at the scene. When they arrived at the scene they noticed that a front structure, a two story building, was totally engulfed in flames and spreading to the second building, first floor."

Courtney Menzies:
"Abandoned building?"

Gladstone Bucknor, Station Officer, Belize City NFS
"Yes, the first building appears to be abandoned however it's still under investigation because it seems that we had some squatters who were actually staying there."

Courtney Menzies:
"So like the other abandoned place, you believe that the persons who were staying there might have done something to cause the fire?"

Gladstone Bucknor, Station Officer, Belize City NFS
"Well, as far as our investigation is going, yes, some type of heat had to be produced at the location where the fire originated from."

Reporter:
"Were any of the surrounding buildings damaged as well?"

Gladstone Bucknor, Station Officer, Belize City NFS
"Yes, the second structure at #10 Hunter's Lane, the first floor was completely destroyed and the ground floor, it's an apartment building divided into two sections, two families actually. The ground floor actually received a lot of heat and water damage."

One person has been detained by police.
