Tonight, police have put a bulletin out for a number of license plates that were stolen yesterday morning in Belize City. Clifford Mejia went out to the neighborhood off Faber's Road where residents woke up to find their plates had disappeared:
Welcome to Maris Deena street off Fabers road where on Tuesday morning at around 2:00 am a thief or thieves seemed to be running something like a drill when they stole the license plates off no less than 9 vehicles. And what they didn't steal they left mangled. And to add to that they also stole 2 batteries from the parked vehicles. Area resident Tony Geban said he thinks they stole it for the aluminum content.
Tony Geban, Area Resident
"But I believe they were either taking them off for the aluminium or to do some kind of illegal stuff with it, they can put it on their car and then go about doing their thing so they will get the wrong plates."
"I don't know. I think people are desperate, they are trying all kinds of things to hustle and that's why I said they are probably selling the aluminum or to do some other crime with it."
And it's not just the inconvenience of getting a new plate as he already has on his pickup it's the cost of it.
Tony Geban, Area Resident
"It cost $8 for the police report and then $10 because they have to inspect the vehicle and $35 for the new plates."
Police say they have received reports of four plates stolen and told police to be on the lookout for them. Plates like these are sometimes used in the commission of crimes.
Police have told their patrol teams, quote, "be on the lookout for said license plates that may be affixed to other vehicles which criminals intend to use for the commission of crime. If officers come in contact with any vehicle using the above mentioned plates, have the vehicle impounded and persons on board detained." end quote.
