UDP Rep Criticizes Government For Lack Of Response On Hijacking
posted (April 29, 2025)
But the Opposition says the government is actually under-reacting. Queen Square area rep, Godwin Haylock explained that there should have been a national response immediately after, even if the prime minister was out of the country. He said that he puts the blame on the government.

Godwin Haylock, Area Rep. Queen Square
"The entire nation is still waiting for an official government press conference on the hijacking of the Tropic Air plane on April 17th. This press conference was to be held in real time immediately after the incident, yet the government to date has refused to hold a real press conference."

"I beg the question why? And the only answer I can come up with is, since winning March 12th, the government is overconfident. They feel that it will pass over like a breeze. Now we all know that the PM is the minister responsible for civil aviation."

"However, we have been reliably informed that he was out of the country on medical, seeking medical attention. So you would have expected that the Department of Civil Aviation or Belize Airport Authority would have taken the lead on this matter because there are talented people in Belize."

"It's sad to report today that still no one has come forward with a press conference. We are waiting for a press conference to talk about what happened. It should be the government who leads the narrative when a national crisis like this happens."

"The silver lining in this is that we really have to thank the media, people like Jules, Indira, who actually took the lead and gave us step-by-step process on what was going on. But there is a great national security risk here. Tourism is our jewel. We have to protect it so everyone is confident to fly that domestic aircraft to San Pedro and enjoy our sandy beaches in San Pedro. The way we go about doing that is having a task force immediately held to deal with it."

"No knee jerking reaction will suffice for something like this. Putting a police officer here or putting a police officer there cannot tell the true story of national security. So I'm holding the government accountable to answer for this."

Again, we'll have the official response from the Civil Aviation Department in tomorrow night's news.
