As we've been reporting, things are coming to a head tomorrow between the BNTU and the Ministry of Education.
The union says it is having a general membership meeting, and the Ministry says permission is not granted for time off from school.
Now, previously that would have been a headache for the former minister of education, but now that he has handed over to Oscar Requena, he was asked if he's glad to get that hot potato off his plate. Here's how he replied.
Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs
"No no no no, I never saw my work at education or my engagement with the BNTU as a headache. I always enjoyed interacting with the BNTU. I think we have, you know, wonderful teachers in Belize. And I understand I always understood the mandate of the union. They have their role and responsibility. You know, so I hope, I hope that good sense prevails I hope that the BNTU leadership and, and their members will understand and appreciate that, you know, the government of Belize, especially over the last four and a half years, five years, has really tried to work very closely with them with in with respect in good faith. We've tried to address all of their concerns. And yes, there are a number of outstanding issues that have to be resolved, but I'm absolutely confident that, you know, the people at the Ministry of Education are committed to working closely with them. So you know demonstrations, protests we understand that that is a right for unions. But, you know, we're coming to you know the end of the school year in the next few months. This is a very critical time for students so I would hope that, you know The BNTu would appreciate that not now is not the time for us to disrupt classes. And have our students sort of school. So let's set the table and, and resolve whatever differences we can without you know without, prejudicing the education."
