In every field of expertise, there are regular updates to procedures and practices, and as a result, the professionals also need to update and change accordingly.
That was just what the Belize Medical and Dental Association did on the first day of their 31st International Congress.
7News stopped by and asked the President what were the topics of focus.
Dr. Andrew Cervantes, President - Belize Medical and Dental Association
"We are having our 31st international medical congress and this is for doctors and dentists and it is whereby we have invited national experts and international experts to come and to help us upgrade our knowledge and current concepts on medicine and dentistry."
Daniel Ortiz
"Can you tell us a little bit about topics were spoken on today and the ones you will focus on tomorrow?"
Dr. Andrew Cervantes
"We have had very important talks this morning. Both national presenters and international presenters, we've had one doctor for example come to talk to us about how to improve the quality of healthcare that we give both for public institutions and for private institutions. Something very necessary because many times - once we belong to a system its kind a hard to want to implement change. It has been am eye opener because this doctor brings experience from visiting many countries in Russia, Africa, South America, Central America and the Caribbean and he has now come to share this knowledge here in Belize for us to be able to improve that standard."
"We've also had another foreign speaker who has come to talk to us about how to learn a specific method so we can identify when small kids are learning to speak - if they have certain hearing problems - how we can identify it as a medical body; doctors, nurses and with this the child will get proper attention in time so that they don't have, let us say - they don't learn to speak too slowly at the proper time."
"We had another presenter to talk about important things when a child is born, neonates we call them and probably with infections or a child being too pre-mature. We have about 150 people attending so far. It's a success for us, it not only represents doctors, dentists, we also have pharmacists, lab technicians and very importantly nurses and even people who work in the public health arena who have come and be part of the health system listening to all the talks and seeing what information they can gather."
The conference continues tomorrow at 8 a.m. the BMDA is welcoming any members of the medical field to attend tomorrow.
The theme for the conference is "Improving Health Care Outcomes in Belize, Maternal and Neonatal Care, Non Communicable Diseases, Management and Financial Sustainability.
