The Post Office is hoping it can increase its efficiency with the donation of two vans from the International Postal Union. We were at the handing over at the post office today - where we found out how this will increase efficiency in the delivery of mails:
Hon. Edmond Castro- Minister of Transport
"Today we are happy to see that we have in house, in hand, key in hand of two key vans that was very much needed. One of the vans will be traversing Belize/Corozal, the northern zone. The other van will be going on the West, on the George Price and Phillip Goldson, politically correct. All we ask is for the caretakers of these vans to take it easy."
Jules Vasquez- reporter
"Your post office is ranked by the international postal union, 112 out of 173, you are in the lower half. Will this bring up your rating?"
John Gabriel- Post Master General
"One of the things that the Universal Postal Union goes by is the extent and effectiveness of the delivery of mails. What we have been experiencing recently with the older vans, we suffered some down-time in terms of how those mails would have been transported. And so, that would have had an effect on our delivery standards. With these new vans, I do not envision we will be having those down-times. So, of course our rating is expected to go up."
Jules Vasquez
"Do you think you will break the 100?"
John Gabriel
"Certainly, we have always been doing well all along, you know. It is only since those two vans got worn out on us that we started to experience those difficulties."
And while the delivery of mails is an essential service even in the world of electronic everything - how can the Post office still stay relevant? Thats what we asked today:...
Hon. Edmond Castro- Minister of Transport
"Even those who use email and whatsapp and viber and so to go purchase that stuff in New York, Canada or Russia still need to get their goods home. So, the postal service is reengineering itself so that they can use technology to fit in and the deliver the goods or services to the world; especially for us here in Belize."
John Gabriel- Post Master General
"What I intend to do, my vision for the post office, is to bring e-commerce services into the post office. Customers go on the internet, shop on the internet- amazon and what have you, and purchase those items. Very often we find that people do not have an address in the US to send those items to. The post office is in communications with Pakya, a reputable firm from out of Miami, where we will be able to provide US addresses to our customers, our customers will then order on the internet, send those items to those US addresses, our agency in Miami will then bring those items to Belize and then we will deliver those items. So, that is one area of e-commerce that I am focusing on."
