Tonight we regret to announce the passing of one of Belize's most distinguished citizens, Sir Henry Edney Conrad Cain. 83 year old Sir Edney died last night at his home in Belmopan. Reports are that he had been ailing for with cancer for 8 years and his last moments were surrounded by family and close friends.

Sir Edney Cain dedicated fifty - one years of service to the people and country of Belize. He, started his career in the public service in October, 1940. Twenty years later, he rose to the post of accountant general then in 1976 became the first managing director of the Monetary Authority. Six years later he was appointed as the country's first governor of the Central Bank. Then in 1984, he was appointed as Belize's first resident ambassador to the United States. In 1985, he was brought back into the government service where he served as financial secretary. He also served as Belize's high commissioner to the United Kingdom, ambassador of Belize to France, Germany, Belgium and European countries.

Sir Henry Edney Conrad Cain's dedication and commitment to his country throughout his career was recognized in 1965, 1976 and 1986 when he was awarded the member of the British Empire and Knight Bachelor by her Majesty the Queen. His most recent honor came in 2006, when the Government of Belize decorated him with the Order of Distinguished Service.

Today, the United Democratic Party extended its deepest condolences in the passing of Sir Henry Edney Cain who they refer to as a most distinguished Belizean patriot. Sir Henry Edney Conrad Cain is survived by his wife lady Leonie Cain and daughters Sharon Lindsey and Maria Trejo. He will be given an official funeral by the government of Belize. The service will be held at Wesley Methodist Church on Tuesday, January twenty second at 2:00.
