The white wig in Belize's high courts, to many observers it seems one
of the most jarring vestiges of colonialism, but owing mostly to Commonwealth
tradition its use has persisted. But no more. When the Supreme Court open its
new legal year on Monday, the wigs will be gone. A press release from the registrar
today announced that judges will no longer wear wigs in court and that in court
they will wear black robes with white shirts, wing collars and bibs. And as
for ceremonial events, such as Monday's opening, judges will wear blue
and red robes - representing Belize's national colors.
