There wasn’t much hope to begin with and talks between the Government
of Belize and BTL have officially collapsed. A release from government this
afternoon says that after one meeting – where both sides laid out their
positions on the accommodation agreement, BTL has responded with a letter from
its British attorneys, Allen and Overy. With that government’s release
says that, “further discussions would be pointless.” It
continues to say that government will now vigorously pursue all options to recover
business tax owed by Telemedia. The company has already been issued with summonses
from the Income Tax Department for the months of February and March –
and that goes to Magistrate’s Court on June 9th.
BTL is reportedly trying to get a Supreme Court injunction to block those proceedings.
