Almost one year after Hurricane Dean delivered a devastating blow to
Northern Belize, help has come to some villagers affected in Belize Rural North.
Through the Belize Rural Development Project, the Department of Agriculture
and the Social Investment Fund will assist farmers and wood carvers from the
Bomba area to generate income. Yesterday morning the villagers received supplies
that include woodcarving sets, chainsaws, generators, cans of thinner and polishing
wax, bee suits, stainless smokers and formic acid bags. Area Representative
Edmund Castro was on hand for the occasion and he explains why there is a need
for a bee keeping and carving project.
Hon. Edmund Castro, Belize Rural North Area Rep.
“This will increase their productivity and also increase their livelihood
in terms of making a dollar. So the people of Bomba will now be able to generate
a little more money since Bomba is also one of the main tourists hub, where
the tourists coming from San Pedro and Caye Caulker must stop in Bomba before
they depart to Altun Ha and Lamanai. They stop in this area, the old road is
Bomba, so the people of Bomba will now be able to have a better method and a
faster way to increase their arts and craft and also have the bee production
so that they can make someone money.”
Two other villages, Lemonal and Flowers Bank were also approved for
assistance.
