A Belize Natural Energy tanker loaded with 9,000 gallons of crude oil ran off
the Hummingbird Highway this morning and landed on its side. The tanker was
enroute to the Port in Big Creek and the driver somehow lost control of the
vehicle near mile 16 -between the southern villages of Pomona and Alta Vista
and ran into a ditch on the side of the road.
The tankers carry 9 thousand gallons of crude oil but luckily none of it spilled.
A release from BNE says the driver informed them immediately and a team was
dispatched to prevent spillage. The driver was treated for minor injuries at
the Southern Regional Hospital. And while a disaster was avoided, we note that
according to the Department of the Environment, Belize Natural Energy still
has not signed to any environmental compliance plan. It had reportedly undertaken
to do so by the end of July. The company gave us no comment on that today.
And in other news from the south, NEMO is tonight advising drivers to exercise
extreme caution when crossing the causeway at Kendall. That is because it is
under water and is under a threat of being washed away.
