Tonight CBC Cable continues to block Channel 7 and KREM TV in almost all communities
west of Belize City. We say ”almost” because Channel 7’s and
KREM’s signals have been restored in Hattieville and at the mile 8 community.
That was done early this afternoon. Still outstanding are Maxboro, La Democracia,
Mahogany Heights, St. Matthews, Frank’s Eddy, Cotton Tree, Gardenia, Armenia
and Dangriga.
As we understand it, CBC is required to block Channel 7 and KREM in those communities,
basically at the say so of Telemedia. The situation is that CBC distributes
its cable service from Belize City on Telemedia’s fibre optic lines, and
basically, BTL doesn’t want Channel 7 and KREM seen in those communities.
Really, it’s nothing more than censorship but it’s also policy for
Telemedia which has maintained an advertising boycott of KREM and Channel 7
since May 2006.
Channel 7 is doing its part by making our case to the Broadcasting Authority
and the Minister of Broadcasting, who is the Prime Minister, and you can do
yours by calling CBC Cable at 223-3886 and registering your complaint.
