The Olympics start in Beijing China on Friday morning and you may be
wondering, who’s representing Belize? Well, there are four athletes competing
in the long jump, taekwando and the two and four hundred hurdles. The Belize
contingent consists of track field athletes Tricia Flores who resides in Belize,
Jonathon Williams who lives in California, Jason Jones who resides in Florida
and Alfonso Martinez who took a break from his studies in Taiwan. Owen Sonny
Meighan who is the public relations officer for the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth
Games Association told 7NEWS that since 1968 Belize has been participating
in the international sporting event. And while we have not won any medals, the
experience alone is rewarding for the athletes.

“The games now have gotten real big, you have 214 countries that take
part and I guess they want the very best. So two of our athletes, the two young
men, Jason Jones and Jonathon Williams, they did time that gets them into the
games automatically.
Our association looks for the athletes with the best time, the best chance.
They have long jumpers, distance runners, but I felt that the athletes who did
the 40 meters, Jonathon, and Jason who does the 200 meters, were the best to
represent us at this time. Their chances of winning gold, I think are pretty
slim but the experience, the exposure and having Belize as a part of the Olympic
family, we will be represented.”
The Olympic games run from august eight to the twenty fourth.
