Road Rage at 2:45 am
posted (August 8, 2008)

Tonight a Belize City taxi driver and two of his passengers are lucky to be alive after the vehicle they were travelling in was riddled with as many as fifteen bullets. But it’s not some kind of carjacking or armed robbery, from the looks of it, it’s just extreme road rage. Around two forty five this morning, twenty seven year old Shawn Ortiz was driving his Toyota Corolla car on Water Lane just behind a Volkswagen Jetta.

Ortiz claims the Jetta was being driven recklessly and the driver suddenly stopped at the corner of Alexandria Street. A person described only as a brown complexioned man then got out of the passenger side, approached Shawn Ortiz and threw a punch at him but missed. That is when Ortiz says he reached down for a machete hidden under the car seat but the assailant then grabbed for his handgun that looked like a nine milimeter pistol, pointed it at the taxi man and fired several shots. The bullets shattered the left rear glass window, Shawn Ortiz then zoomed out of the danger zone but as he sped away another bullet ripped through the vehicle’s trunk. Luckily, everyone managed to get way without being shot.

Belize City Police say they have no suspects at this time and are investigating to see if it was a case of road rage or if Shawn Ortiz was intentionally targeted for some unknown reason.
