On Sunday night eighteen year old Yalbac resident Wilson Ayala succumbed to
his injuries after he was knocked off his motorcycle five days ago. The head
on collision between the motorbike and an unidentified vehicle happened just
after seven last Thursday morning. It took place on the Yalbac Road in the Cayo
District. This afternoon 7NEWS caught up with the
bereaved family at the city morgue. They were there to receive Ayala’s
body following a post mortem but as 7NEWS found out
the family is upset because they say there is no official report on the accident.
And now they are concerned that the investigation will not be able to proceed
and the driver who is responsible for the accident will never be found.
Equally upset is Yalbac Village Chairman Harrison McCullock who told 7NEWS
he was shocked to find out that there was no official police report. He appealed
to the proper authorities to help.
Harrison McCullock, Chairman – Yalbac
“I personally went to the Spanish Lookout Police Station on Friday
and the police told me he took a statement from the guy that was driving the
vehicle and now where is this vehicle. This vehicle is running, this vehicle
should be parked in the police compound. This is more than critical, this is a life taken. This young man has his mom, has his brother, has small brothers
and sisters and it is something that’s hurting because your child is not
like a vehicle. A vehicle, if you crash it and mash it up, the insurance will
buy it back but you can never buy a life back.
I just want the public to know that with these kind of policemen we have
working in our area, if they cannot do their job properly and they are not neglecting
their job and just doing it for favouritism, well I will be asking the public
and the Minister and the Inspector or Superintendent to please replace them
because the motorcycle is in the police station and he told me he just took
a statement from the guy that was driving the vehicle and told him to go.
This is the same police men that are in the Spanish Lookout branch that
didn’t give this report to the San Ignacio Branch, didn’t give it
to the Belmopan Branch, nor Belize City and now this child passed away last
night. I went to burial permit and they told me they knew nothing about it.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
So you feel the policeman not writing a report will affect the investigation
now as they try to find this investigator who knocked down and killed your nephew?
Harrison McCullock,
“This will affect not only the work of the police but will also affect
the area where he’s at because if he cannot make a report of an accident
well then that is not a police man.”
