Less than one month after a cargo truck was jacked of a shipment carrying cough
medicines that contain the drug pseudo–ephedrine which is also illegally
used to produce the illicit drug crystal meth, reports tonight say that local
authorities have yet another case on their hands. This time however no shipment
was jacked and no one was taken hostage but it was customs officials who made
the discovery themselves. Details are sketchy and we could not get further information
from authorities but 7NEWS understands that on Monday
two Belizeans were detained and today face charges of importing a prohibited
commodity after they were caught by Customs officials trying to import ten thousand
two hundred and forty pseudo - ephedrine tablets.
Viewers may recall that the importation of this highly addicted substance was
banned in Belize on June twenty first after consultation with the United States
Drug Enforcement Agency and the Ministry of Economic Development. According
to reports, this latest shipment with a market value of over forty six thousand
dollars came on a Taca flight through Guatemala which originated from Dubai.
7NEWS understands the two Belizeans in custody face fines amounting
to over one hundred and thirty eight thousand dollars. They are expected to
be charged either Thursday or Friday.
While crystal meth is not known to be used in Belize it is manufactured in
Mexico and Guatemala.
