Jayson Jones is one of the five representing Belize in the Beijing
Olympics. It is a dream come true for Jones, seen here at the opening ceremony,
but it is slowly becoming a nightmare. That is because he will compete in the
track and field on Monday but his family says he doesn’t even have clothes
to wear. According to Shereda Jones, Jayson’s mother, Belize did not provide
the athletes with any new competition apparel and shoes for the Olympics!
She says that neither were they told that they needed to buy their own outfits.
So she says Jayson and the other Belizean athletes have to use their old gear.
That means before running on the track on Monday, Jones will have to jog to
the laundromat. Belize’s other participants are Tricia Flowers, Emma Wade,
and Jonathon Williams in track and field, and Alfonso Martinez in taekwondo.
We were unable to get comment from the local Olympic Association.
Jonathan Williams will compete tomorrow night in round one of the men's 400
meter hurdles; Jayson Jones starts on Monday in round one of the men's 200 meter;
Tricia Flores begins on Tuesday in the women's long jump qualifying rounds,
and Alphonso Martinez opens on Wednesday in the men’s 58kg preliminary
round of 16.
