Security Guard killed in Western Highway Collision
posted (August 25, 2008)

He was a long time employee of Anchor Security in Belmopan but on Saturday evening, forty three year old Delroy Gentle Vernon was tragically killed in a road accident. According to Belmopan Police at about 5:00 in the evening, thirty three year old Belmopan resident Michael Gillett was driving in his Honda Accord behind a National Transport Bus that was heading to Belmopan. When the bus stopped in Cotton Tree Village Gillett swerved into the road to avoid rear ending it. But that swerve took him right into the path of oncoming traffic.

That oncoming traffic was Gentle Vernon driving his Toyota Corolla and the massive impact killed him on the spot. The Corolla still remains in a ditch off the side of the Western Highway between miles forty three and forty four. According to the General Manager of Anchor Security Gareth Gentle Sr., his co worker was on his way to Jaguar Paw to drop off employees when the accident occurred.

Gareth Gentle Sr., Anchor Security
“Delroy was going Jaguar Paw Resort and on his way entering Cotton Tree Village, I understand that a bus had stopped to let off passengers and a car coming from Belize City direction collided head on into him spinning Delroy’s car off the road and he was killed.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
This is a major loss to the security firm, he was a long time employee?

Gareth Gentle Sr.,
“Delroy was our most senior person here and indeed this is a really really big loss for us. We’ve had our losses in the past but Delroy was the first person here and the last person to leave so for us it is a tremendous loss.”

Aaron Hyde, the security guard who was being transported to Jaguar Paw received injuries but was released from the hospital today and is at home recovering. As for Michael Gillett, he reportedly received some injuries and is said to be recovering. Belmopan Police have been interviewing the bus driver Sandro Salazar, Michael Gillett and Aaron Hyde but have not yet charged anyone for the fatal traffic accident.
