The Chinese community in southern Belize has been complaining about health
inspector Jerome Gill. They told us that Gill had been extorting them, telling
them that if they didn’t pay him a bribe, he’d shut them down. Well
now, Gill has been caught red-handed. Working along with restaurant and shop
owner Weijun Tan, Punta Gorda Police set up a sting operation on Friday.
The Chinese businessman had told police that a week earlier, on August 15th,
Gill had told him that he would close down his restaurant if Tan didn’t
pay him $500. Tan agreed to pay the following Friday and Gill went to pick it
up at his store on Friday afternoon. Tan paid him in five $100 notes. Gill walked
out, not knowing that the bills were marked and police were waiting. They pounced
on Gill and found him with the marked bills.
Gill was formally arrested and charged with extortion.
