Last week we introduced to some youths who were ready to put down the
guns and to put their hands in the ground in Belize Rural North where they were
offered land to farm on. Well there has been a change of plans. They will still
be putting their hands in the ground but it will be in Teakettle. It turns out
80 acres that Belize Rural North Area Representative Hon. Edmund Castro identified
isn’t ready yet. The problem is that the youths are ready, in fact they
have a deadline. President of Youth Uprising Wilford Lauriano told us they can’t
wait because of the full moon.
Wilford Lauriano, Director – Youth Uprising
“Before the 7th there will be a moon and then we don’t want
to miss that moon. By ketching that moon, by December we can have this city
flooding with sweet peppers and different vegetables that can help the city.”
Calvin Osman Jr., Youth Uprising
“Last year December we had to go to Chetumal to bring in some onions
and different things. This is the time for the youths to come together, unite
together, and prove we can do it because the youths out there look up to elder
guys and if the elder guys want it to work, it will work. Come together, work with each other, and make us own something and build a better community and
a better Belize.”
Kevin Cadle, Deputy Director – CYDP
“The guys from Youth Uprising, the organization that is working with
us on this agriculture project, is basically moving to a different location
until the land is fully prepared on the Northern Highway to a parcel of land
on the Western Highway where they will actually start constructing a building
for them to utilize to start their agricultural production in the Teakettle
area.”
Wilford Lauriano,
“We would like to ask some of the best sector in the country, if they
can help us in donating whatever towards the agriculture like seeds, tools,
whatever. We would also like to ask the business sector that we don’t
have a transport for these guys to reach point B to point A. So if the community
can come up with a transport that can help us to move around, to get things
off the ground quickly it will be an asset for us.”
Anthony White, Youth Uprising
“We don’t have money, that is the only thing we are short of.
We have ideas and we have ways of stopping the problems in Belize but we need
help and we need money so the government and business people need to hear fi
we cry and come through. We are not playing, we are serious. Belize we will
be here forever, we won’t move from here so we have to make a difference.”
Kevin Cadle,
“Youth Uprising will actually be in charge of the 80 acres of land.
That organization will work the land and what will happen is that the land will
not be available for sale or for anything of that sort but for the organization
to work the land for a period of years until government decides that it is okay
for the land to be transferred over to Youth Uprising.”
Cleon Smith, Youth Uprising
“Me as a leader I want to lead the youths and let them do the right
thing so I am asking the government to help us so we can start a tilapia pond
or build some cement blocks or something for Hattieville because I am the youth
who a lot of the youths look up pon as a role model. I am a role model for the
youths right now and I want them to do the positive thing.”
Muschamp, Youth Uprising
“This is not the time for Belizean youths to be killing themselves.
Come out and do something positive because this is free land di give away, unu
can’t di imagine. It is free land. Just come out ghetto youths, come and
do something.”
Only 30 youths have signed up but 80 acres is available. You can sign
up by contacting the Conscious Youth Development Program’s office on North
Front Street. Again the land will be leased to the youths and it is non-transferable.
The youths will relocate their farms to the land in Belize Rural North in December.
