Beltraide, that’s the agency with the responsibility to promote Belizean
investment worldwide, but right now getting over internal troubles right here
in Belize is proving too much to deal with. 7NEWS
has confirmed that Chairman Jeffrey Locke has resigned his post. Representative
of the American Chamber of Commerce Bill McKenzie has also reportedly resigned.
What’s behind it? We’re reliably informed that there are substantial
differences if not open warfare between the Board of Directors and Executive
Director Guadalupe Lima. CEO in the Ministry of Investment and Trade Sharmaine
Hyde would only say that there are a cocktail of issues which started with the
board being concerned about the management problems in Beltraide. Hyde conceded
that there has been friction between the Board and the Executive Director.
Trade Minister Erwin Contreras told us that he has received but is not inclined
to accept Jeffrey Locke’s letter of resignation. He hopes that some compromise
for a way forward can be worked out at next Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting.
Both Locke, whose name is much mentioned by the Prime Minister and Lima, who
is from the Trade Minister’s division, were brought in with the new administration.
