7NEWS can confirm tonight that tomorrow police will
charge a Belize City teenager for lobbing a live grenade into a crowded area
on carnival day, Saturday September 13th. His name will be released tomorrow,
but we can tell you that he is from the Buttonwood Bay area and is 19 years
old. He will reportedly be arraigned for a long list of offences – including
a number of attempted murder charges.
As for the grenade, that falls under possession of unlicensed ammunition. But
he may be charged for possession of prohibited ammunition because the grenade
is classed as armour piercing. As of Saturday, a statutory instrument came into
effect which classes any type of grenade, grenade launcher or explosive device
as prohibited. But because the carnival grenade was lobbed a week before, this
suspect cannot be charged under that new law. But he will be charged tomorrow
and we’ll show you who he is then.
