One of Belize’s most notorious criminals, Hubert Kid Velasquez is wanted
in Orange Walk after police say he orchestrated the botched kidnapping of a
taxi driver. Yesterday morning at 5:00 am, 39 year old taxi man Marcos Alvarez
Campos was driving in Orange Walk Town when a young couple flagged him down.
They asked to be taken to Asuncion Street and when they got there, they told
him to open the trunk so that they could load something. But just as he opened
the trunk, two other men jumped Campos; one put a knife to his neck while the
other punched him across the face. They snatched off his jewellery, then stuffed
him inside the trunk, locked it, and drove off – headed to the city.
But at 5:00 in the morning, it’s hard to find a cab, much less be selective
about the state of it. This one was a 30 year old Mercedes diesel sedan –
not exactly what you’d call road-worthy. And 11 miles out of Orange Walk
at Rhaburn Ridge it shut down. But while he was in the trunk, Campos Alvarez
managed to call 911 – but it was directed to Belize City so Ladyville
Police got the alert. They headed north and when they got to Rhaburn Ridge saw
the victim waiting for a ride along with his abductors.
Two of the men high-stepped it into the bushes when they saw police, but police
caught 18 year old Kendall Sanchez of an Antelope Street Extension address in
Belize City and 21 year old Rose Marie Reyes, of #2 Pitter Street, also in Belize
City. Those two were taken in into custody and we know that at least one of
them has given a caution statement implicating Hubert Kid Velasquez, Nolbert
Bruce and another young man known only as Alex. Those three are still at large,
but charges for kidnapping, robbery and other offences will be made out in all
their names. Orange Walk Police believe the group had been in Orange Walk from
over the weekend – and just jacked the taxi to get a ride back to the
city.
