Belize City police still do not know the identity of a man who was knocked
down and killed between miles two and three on the Northern Highway. 7NEWS
arrived shortly after the accident occurred around nine thirty on Friday night.
By then the victim had already been taken by ambulance to the Karl Heusner Memorial
Hospital. The information is that the victim described only as Hispanic man
about five feet tall was walking across the highway when he was hit by a Mitsubishi
Montero.
The driver, 31 year old Belizean businessman Derwayne Swift told police that
he was travelling towards Ladyville when the collision occurred. At the scene
brake marks on the pavement suggests that the driver did try to avoid hitting
the pedestrian. The impact was so great that the victim was vaulted into the
air and both his feet were broken. But he survived the initial impact. However
three hours later he died at the KHMH.
Today police told 7NEWS that a woman has come forward
to say she knows the victim but they are awaiting documentation to prove his
identity before they release his name.
