Today Belize City Police arrested and charged the young man they believed attempted
to kill thirty four year old Freddy Grant as he stood on the sidewalk at the
corner of Vernon Street and the Conch Shell Bay area last Wednesday night. He
is twenty four year old fisherman Leon Blease. He has been charged with one
count of attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and one count of dangerous
harm.
Freddy Grant told police that around ten that night he was shot by a man who
passed him on a bicycle. 7NEWS understands that he did identify his shooter
as a person known only as Leon with who he has had a problem. When Leon Blease
appeared before Chief Magistrate Margaret Gabb–McKenzie he was told that
due to the nature of the charges, the court could not offer him bail.
It is not the first time that Leon Blease has appeared in court. He was recently
acquitted of a robbery charge. In that case he was accused of an armed hold-up
in which he robbed a British national of his cell phone. He is scheduled to
reappear in court on October twenty third.
