As a city traffic officer, Mark Banner is always in the middle of things, but
now he’s in the middle of a situation much more complex than a traffic
jam. First of all, he is on remand at the Hattieville prison and that’s
because he’s accused of impregnating a 14-year-old student of western
Belize. A medical examination has certified that she is 4 months pregnant.
According to police reports, on September 29 of last month, the alleged incident
was report to police by the child’s mother after she confirmed that her
daughter was pregnant. In fact, she told police that, if it was not for the
child gaining weight and her bodily figure changing drastically, she would not
have know that her child was involved with an older man. The child told police
that on 6 different occasions, in June of this year, banner had sex with her
at a home on the city’s southside.
In court this afternoon, Banner was slapped with six counts of unlawful carnal
knowledge when he appeared in front of the Chief Magistrate Margaret Gabb-McKenzie.
No plea was taken since the matter is an indictable offence and she informed
him that she could not grant him bail since the amendment to the Act on June
12, carnal knowledge matters cannot be granted bail at the Magistrate’s
Court. Banner can apply within 7 days at the Supreme Court.
