Last year more than seven million pieces of mail passed through the
Belize Post Office. That’s half a million more than in 2006 and the Post
Office predicts they’ll handle 8 million pieces of mail this year. So
in a world of email, snail mail still matters and its importance was highlighted
today as part of World Post Day. Mail supervisor James Gabouurel told us why
the postman will always have your mail.
James Gabourel, Mail Supervisor
“The Post Office as you know has always been there and today people
would want to downplay the importance of the post and that is because they believe
that with the advent of the internet, that the internet can substitute for the
post which is indeed not so. I am sure you will agree that in very small communities
they might not even have internet services and it is in those very small communities
that the Post Office is especially important. The Post Office gets the mail
from whatever location and delivers it to no matter how small a community it
is and that is why the Post Office is so important. Also, the coming of the
internet has brought much business to the Post Office where you have people
ordering items over the internet and they would want that item like in a flash,
the Post Office does offer that service in delivering your items to you as quickly
as possible.”
As part of World Post Day, yesterday employees at the Post Office fed
the homeless in Battlefield Park. Tomorrow there will be a training session
for staff which will culminate with a dinner honouring three outstanding retired
postal employees. This is the first time Belize has celebrated World Post Day.
