$116,930 Heist from Belize Bank in Corozal
posted (October 20, 2008)

There was a major heist from the Belize Bank Branch in Corozal last night. Around 7:30, in the heavy rain, two men dressed in black and wearing Halloween masks and gloves on their hands robbed two Belize Bank employees of $116,930. Vilma Guzman and Maria Quan were at the bank’s back door putting cash into the ATM when they were ambushed. The men then fled in Guzman’s car but didn’t get far. Most of the money had been recovered and two suspects are detained tonight. The head of Corozal Police Miguel Guzman says at least one bank teller was involved.

Miguel Guzman, Corozal Police
“We did an intensive investigation following the report where he followed al leads. We searched homes and we intercepted a vehicle occupied at the time driven by Pablo Rosado and had an occupant by the name of Pablo Rosado and an occupant by the name of Alex Arana.

It is a Nissan Altima car now in police custody and it was then that we received certain leads about the whereabouts of the money. Police went to San Andres Road in a lot that ahs a building under construction and they found the knapsack with the money amounting to $116,110. So $820 is still missing. We still continued our investigation and at 6:30 AM Miss Vilma Guzman was found at the Ricalde Stadium at 6:30.

The investigation starts with the tellers who are suspects in this case so they were they detained last night and we sort of questioned or got statements from them and then we detained the two fellows we mentioned.

We are exploring all sort of possibilities right now including hat it may be an inside job. There is some indication that they had some info0rmation from certain people who work along with the bank but that matter is still under investigation and once we come to some conclusion then we will arrest and charge one or two of the tellers.”

That interview was courtesy our colleagues at Baymen Cable North. Guzman says they made the quick arrests because of cooperation from the public. The police station is right now the street from the bank but Guzman believes the men made their move because it was raining.
