While our coverage of the flooding started down south, is now focused
out west and is slowly turning to the central part of Belize along the River
Valley, what we’ve left out is Orange Walk. There is flooding reported
in Trial Farm, Douglas, San Roman, and San Antonio. Water levels in some areas
have risen by 27 inches. In low-lying Douglas the river has run over its banks
and entered homes. Area Representative and Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega
put on his rubber boots and toured the area by boat. He told our colleagues
at Channel 10 that shelters have been opened.
Hon. Gaspar Vega, Deputy Prime Minister
“In San Antonio we already have a big farm tractor that we got from
the Ministry of Agriculture that is working from I think Saturday ensuring that
people can get to and from Orange Walk Town to the village and we are watching
closely to see if there is anything else that we would have to do. We getting
ready the shelters, we usually say hurricane shelters but now it is shelters
which are prepared for anything. We are praying to the Good Lord that the water
quits its rising and hoping it doesn’t get any worse but we’re going
to keep in touch with them, ensuring as I said with the different leaders of
the villages, working together to ensure that the people get all the assistance
possible.
I sincerely don’t feel that the water from Cayo is going to affect
us. It is going to overflow into Belize District first before it gets here.
What I am watching closely is the rain that they’ve been getting in Mexico.
That affects us more quickly than the one that comes from Cayo.”
Because of the flooding, it has been announced that there will be no
classes for schools in San Roman, Firebun, San Antonio, San Carlos and Indian
Church. All those schools in Orange Walk Town will resume classes as normal
tomorrow. Same goes for Corozal where all schools will resume classes as normal.
However, classes in rural Corozal will be closed.
In the Belize District there will be no classes for the Belize River
Valley and schools along the Maskall Road. Primary schools in the Ladyville
area along the Western Highway and in Belize City will have classes. Secondary
schools in the city will also have classes. Classes will resume in Stann Creek
and Toledo Districts. There will be no classes in the entire Cayo District.
And we’ll have still a little more on flooding later – as we’ll
tell you how you can help the Red Cross get help to those who need it.
