The Red Cross' Response
posted (October 21, 2008)

And if you’re wondering how you can help all those affected by the floods, you need to call the Red Cross at 227-3319. Today Communications Officer Rafael Martinez told us what they’ve been doing and what they plan to do with your help.

Rafael Martinez, Red Cross
“We have since served 250 hot meals to people in the shelters, primarily in the ITVET building as was the Sacred Heart Building. We have actually served over 2,500 liters of water to people who are in the shelters there and this is of course in conjunction with the Ministry of Heath to ensure that we providing the safe drinking water to people who need it. We have also given out 57 blankets, pampers and baby formulas because they were really in demand from down south. We have served 21 families, this amounts to 91 persons. We’ve put together some 59 school kits so that means that people who are in the shelters, the children can be occupied with things like drawings, coloring books, pen and papers and other little items that could actually stimulate their interests while they are in shelters.

In Orange Walk what we are doing is we are assisting in the evacuations of persons from Louisiana, Trial Farm, Blackwater Creek and they will be taken to the multipurpose building. All of this is being conjunction with NEMO.

The greatest need at this time would be food because as I mentioned we still are serving two hundred and 50, 21 families in Cayo and of course we don’t know what the situation will be here. But the first thing people want I something hot, something warm in their stomachs. So I would appeal to people who want to help to donate food items so we can actually help our people who are in need.”

Again, anyone with donations can make donations at any of the branch offices or at the Belize City at headquarters or call 227-3319 or 223-4276.
