Today 25 University of Belize students ditched classes and jumped in
a bus and then on a boat bound for the Belize River Valley communities of Bermudian
Landing and Rancho Dolores. They went bearing gifts of food for the flood affected
villagers. The students began soliciting donations on Monday from students and
the business community and today they left UB’s campus in Belize City
with enough supplies to feed 200 families in the River Valley. Student government
President Moses Sulph and his Vice President Justin Espat led the initiative.
Moses Sulph, Student Government President
“We have canned stuff, biscuits, we had different canned items, we have pampers, we have water, we have disposable cups, disposable dishes, all
different can items we have at this time that we are taking out there.”
Keith Swift,
Why did you decide to do this?
Moses Sulph,
“We decide to do it because at a time like this, as a student body
we wanted to give back to those who are in need. We hope to give out about 200
families at this time. Our Belmopan counterparts are also travelling to different
areas and we will also be going back next week as we’re asking students
to bring more. Each student is supposed to bring at least two canned items so
we’ll be going back again. At this time we will only be able to assist
200 families. Everything is packaged off in different boxes and stuff so that’s
what we’re doing.”
The students say they received considerable donations from Price Premier
Products, Sikaffy, and 88 Shopping Center. They value the donation at around
$5,000.
