Last night on 7NEWS, Minister of Foreign Affairs
Wilfred Elrington discussed the compromis document that he will sign next month
at the OAS in Washington along with his Guatemalan counterpart. The compromis
outlines the terms that will be taken to the citizens of Belize and Guatemala
in a referendum. When we asked him about it, Elrington volunteered that we could
get a copy.
But it turns out we can’t. When we asked for it at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs today we were told Chief Negotiator Fred Martinez’s position is
that “since the special agreement has not been signed as yet, it is
not yet a public document.” So, unless something gives, we figure
we will know what’s in the compromis when you do - which is after
it’s signed.
