To most of us – “Buffalo Soldier” is just a song
but in reality it is 200 years of American military history. The buffalo soldiers
are African American soldiers who fought for Uncle Sam starting in 1812. The
thing is that they aren’t mentioned in history books – which is
why there is now a Buffalo Soldiers National Museum. It has brought alive the
history of the buffalo soldiers on the museum’s walls in Houston Texas
and on stage. It opened in 2001 and its first trip outside the United States
is to Belize. The show takes place tomorrow night at the Bliss and the Museum’s
Vice President Pam Plumbar Holliman gave us a preview.
Pam Plumbar Holliman, Vice President
“Buffalo Soldiers National Museum is a museum that houses artefacts
and military history on African Americans who serve in the military. We were
always there, from the beginning of every war that America has ever been involved
in, the Buffalo Soldiers have been there. They are the “African American”
American soldiers.
It is important because in African American history, our children don’t
know where they come from, they don’t know about the military heroes that
were involved in our culture, they don’t know the medals they’ve
won, wars that they were actively involved in, they don’t know about their
presence. And so the Buffalo Soldiers Museum gives them the opportunity to learn
that as well as the presentations we do when we have our travelling show and
travelling exhibits.
The show itself will be at the Bliss on Friday evening at 7 pm and the
show will have three components. It will be an introduction to the museum where
we will be presenting the history of the Buffalo Soldier museum, the history
of Buffalo Soldier, and then we will have re-enactments. We’ve got in
house actors, resident actors with the museum who will be presenting Harriet
Tubman’s ‘A Journey to Freedom’ and it is Harriet Tubman’s
relationship to the Buffalo Soldiers which is an outstanding piece done by Melissa
Waddy-Thibodeaux. And then we will also have a re-enactment of the Buffalo Soldier
and the history of the Buffalo Soldiers and Mr. Faulkner will be doing that,
James Faulkner who is an outstanding artist, riveting voice, and he is the most
appealing conversation you have ever heard. So I think it will be a great show,
people will really enjoy it.
The show is very exciting. The show is very interactive, the presentations
are very interactive. If you can imagine going to a show where you are so captivated
by the actors in the show that you feel a part of it, that’s what this
show is like. It is not like going to a boring museum and looking at all those
pictures and names and things. It is not like that at all, its actually pretty
exciting.”
