The news tonight is again the flood situation. Western Belize is in recovery
mode while the central part of Belize is in emergency mode as flood waters slowly
recede in the west and are rising in the Belize District.
This afternoon Prime Minister Dean Barrow along with NEMO Minister Melvin Hulse,
Minister of State in the Ministry of Works Edmund Castro, and Chief Executive
Officer in the Ministry of NEMO Col. George Lovell went on a helicopter tour
of the affected areas. They left from Belmopan at 1 o’clock and first
flew over the river valley. They attempted to land in Lemonal but couldn’t
and was only able to do so Crooked Tree. They did touch down in the Albion Islands in Orange Walk where they were met by Deputy Prime Minister and Area Representative
Gaspar Vega.
The Prime Minister’s tour also flew over the inland areas of the Belize
District which is where all eyes are tonight. That is because the flood waters
are now moving inland where they are forcing people out of their homes in Belama,
villages along the Northern Highway, and over the weekend it even forced closure
of the Burrell Boom Road. Jacqueline Godwin has been in the area all day and
we’ll have her report shortly.
