posted (October 30, 2008)

He is Belize’s favourite baker but today Zebedeee Pitterson wasn’t recognized for his world famous bread and bun – he was singled out for his charity work. Since 1994 Pitterson has been quietly feeding the children and homeless a hot meal three times a week from the ‘Feed My Sheep Kitchen.’ Well his good work is no longer a secret because today Pitterson won First Caribbean Bank’s Unsung Hero Award for Belize. He was chosen from 15 entries and honoured at an award ceremony this evening. We caught up with Pitterson in, where else but his bakery, and he told us what the award means to him.

Zebedee Pitterson, Unsung Hero Finalist
“I thank God for it because for instance I prefer for 30 children and now I have 50 so it costs me more and that is the problem. I don’t turn any away and everybody gets dinner. By the grace of God they get their good, that’s it.

Different ones sent in for it but because I use my own money and my time and that’s why. I use at least $10,800 a year to do it. It is $125 a day but only three times a week I do it so when you figure that it is about $375 for the week. For a month and it comes out to over $1,200 plus I pay light bill, I pay water bill and things like that.”

Pitterson won $12,000 which will be used towards his charity. That’s $2,000 more than last year’s winner. Pitterson’s name has been entered in the Regional Unsung Hero Competition. A winner will be selected shortly.
