Today one of the robbers who held up a man on Thursday just outside of a mechanic
shop in Belize City was taken to Belize City Magistrate’s Court. Nineteen
year old Valentine Baptist is one of the two robbers who held up at gunpoint
fifty year old Joseph Duce. The robbery occurred around eleven fifty on Thursday
morning on Malcolm Street. He was waiting at the mechanic shop for his vehicle
to be fixed. The victim was robbed of his cell phone and gold chain valued at
over three thousand dollars.
This afternoon, Baptist was arraigned in front of Chief Magistrate Margaret
McKenzie where he was charged with one count of robbery and one count of conspiracy
to commit robbery. He was denied bail and remanded to Hattieville Prison until
December fifth. Viewers may recall that the other suspect is already in police
custody but he remains under guard at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
But what led to that quick arrest was probably the action taken by the victim
himself. It is reported that as the pair of robbers fled the scene, Duce pulled
out his licensed thirty eight revolver and fired five shots. Two of the bullets
struck one of the robbers identified as eighteen year old David Sutherland.
He was hit in the right shoulder and leg.
Of course David Sutherland is expected to be charged upon his release from the
KHMH.
