Tonight we note the passing of seventy three year old soca legend Byron Lee.
He died this morning on his hospital bed in Jamaica following his battles with
transitional cell cancer and bladder cancer.
Byron Lee called Belize home and performed in Belize regularly; up until two
years ago he had an almost twelve year streak going. His appearances also dated
back to the 70’s and he remained popular because of his eternal readiness
to adopt to new styles.
And broader than Belize, Bryon Lee contributed greatly to the Caribbean cultural
image and was very instrumental in linking local music from the various Caribbean
countries to help boost tourism. He reigned for 50 years in the region as a
leading Caribbean musician who particularly took soca music abroad. He was loved
in Belize and will be missed.
