The Corozal Civic Center was converted into a clinic over the weekend
for the second Belize-Mexico Health Fair. Over the 2 days, 35 doctors, nurses,
and other health personnel provided free HIV tests, pap smears, dental services,
eye examinations and general medical consultations. Minister of Health Pablo
Marin opened the fair saying that Belize and Mexico share the same health concerns
and problems.
Hon. Pablo Marin, Minister of Health
“Belize as in Mexico faces many challenges; diabetes, hypertension,
heart disease, HIV, cancer, tobacco related illnesses, mental health, oral health,
road traffic accidents. The list is very long but you will notice that all these
challenges have one thing in common – they can all be prevented or at
the very least we can prevent the worst effects of each of them. We can choose
not to smoke, we can choose to exercise regularly, to eat a healthy diet, to
drive more carefully. The governments of Belize and Mexico have chosen to work
closely together. In the next few weeks we will sign a major border health agreement
between our two countries. This will increase the opportunities for future cooperation
for health fairs like this, for care and treatment, for scholarships, for exploring
the chances available to us.”
Belize and Mexico will sign the border health agreement there is even
better news for Corozal as its hospital has been designated by UNICEF as “baby
friendly.”
