And while they won’t be slapped with the slightly ludicrous sounding
charge of handling stolen goods, the Belize Bank is at the center of the transaction
that involved the alleged theft of US$10 million of public funds. And the Bank
issued a release today clearly stating its position. The release says, “The
Bank....was not a party to discussions between the Government of Belize...and
the Government of Venezuela and had no knowledge as to what was agreed between
those governments.”
It continues, “regardless of what happened between the governments...the
Bank is entitled to the satisfaction of the longstanding debt owed to it. “
And the statement asserts that the Bank believes it has been, quote “wrongly
forced to pay the 10 million U.S. dollars to government...the new government
has sought to avoid the obligations of the old...put simply, the government
has used the tools of state to obtain free money form the bank,” close
quote.
It concludes by saying that the bank expects to recover all its money in due
course.
