Burglary Suspect Goes Off on Police
posted (December 12, 2008)

Police have more burglaries and aggravated burglaries than they can handle. As we reported last night, between the 3rd and the 10th of December 14 burglaries were reported in Belize City. Burglary number 15 occurred last night on Iguana Street where thieves broke into the home of Edmond Gilharry and stole a set of expensive speakers.

Officer in Charge of CIB Julio Valdez told us last night that they have rounded up suspects. One of those suspects is 24 year old John Burke. He was detained Tuesday and released yesterday without being charged. And that’s why Burke is mad because not only does he believe he was unjustly detained for two days. He also claims a team of overzealous police officers with heavy weaponry barged into his yard on Haulze Street – destroying his home and terrorizing a yard full of kids – including his three year old son.

Burke today showed us the path of destruction left by the cops. We also spoke off camera to Mishanne Reneau who witnessed the search.

John Burke, Burglary Suspect
“From Tuesday morning they’ve had me at the station for something they say I am conspiracy bout. They aren’t saying I did it but they are saying I conspiracy bout it.”

Mishanne Reneau, Witnessed Search
“The whole set a man they come, went into the young lady’s house, my sister’s house, searched the house, hauled down the room door, move the table, search the TV, cut up the chair, and plus went into my nice room, tek out the panty draw, search the panty draw, and went into the bathroom and bruk the sink.”

John Burke,
“I am telling them for two years and change I di work and now they heard I am behaving and if they want me to give trouble again, because it looks like if I don’t give trouble they have no job. So I am telling them why are they trying to get me fired. They even took a bracelet paper from me for my son, an earring, a phone and my watch which my mom just sent from the States for me. They told me because I don’t have a receipt they will take it. They took a TV and a roaster out of the house and they bruk up the siding for the house, bruk up the stove, tear up the chair, tear up the siding, bruk down the roof, bruk the bed, bruk from our sink which we wash our hands in and expect we noh fi do nothing about it.”

Mishanne Reneau,
“They searched the whole yard, all over there and they didn’t find nothing and told the children to shut their mouths. They told my kids to shut up and then the same police say they would shot. I don’t know who they would shot. I don’t know but this is lone fool.”

John Burke,
“When I reach yah now they di look to take refridge, that is the washing machine, chair and everything and everything has papers and they are seeing it and they still want to take everything like it is a notorious criminal they are dealing with. It is just John Burke they are dealing with and I change my life. I noh shot nobody and di kill nobody. I am just somebody who ease it down for two years from crime and now they want to interrogate me and everybody knows I work for Mr. Elrington back here. I don’t know why they want to stress me.

I work from 7 to 6 in the night so my conscience is clean and so they can say whatever they want but I hate how the police behave with me. That is all I have to say and I can show them all my house what they did and I am really mad about it and would want them to give back what they have to give us or try fix our house which they damaged or something because this is the first they are doing me this and I don’t like this – fi real man.”

Up to this evening, Mishanne Reneau’s 17 year old brother was still detained pending charges. We do know that police had recovered stolen property and two youths from the area ere charged for handling stolen goods. None of the accused lived in John Burke’s yard.
