11 Soldiers, 110 Miles, 20 hours
posted (December 12, 2008)

On Monday afternoon 11 British soldiers will participate in a grueling 110 mile relay run that will start in Dangriga on Monday and ends in Ladyville on Tuesday. It is called the “Dangriga Challenge” and it is an initiative by the British Army in Belize to raise funds for the flood victims. The 11 British soldiers leave Dangriga at 2 pm on Monday and 20 hours later, at around 10 am on Tuesday, they expect to finish at Price Barracks. So they will run right through the night into morning and into the following night – all for charity. Their target is the very humble figure of three thousand dollars. Sergeant Jamie Puttock is the lead organizer.

Sgt. Jamie Puttock, Organizer
“It will be mentally and physically hard as well because it is throughout the night as well as it is constant; if you’re not running you’re sitting in a bus waiting to run so yeah it will be mentally and physically hard.”

Keith Swift,
Are you going to be one of the runners?

Sgt. Jamie Puttock,
“I definitely one of the runners; you can’t organize an event and not run. Currently there are ten runners and we are going to relay so each runner will be doing 11 miles each covering altogether 110 miles. It will take about 20 hours to get here.”

Keith Swift,
Why are you guys doing this?

Sgt. Jamie Puttock,
“We are doing it for the flood victims of Belize and we have all been out here since January this year and after seeing the flood, apparently it was the worst in ten years. All the money we raise which is $1,500 we are going to hand over to the Red Cross to help the flood victims and the Belize community. It is just a nice thing to do. We’ve worked out here for many years and we’ve seen how the Belizean community has been hit quite bad and out here the lifestyle is different than it is in the UK so we are just trying our best to help.”

Keith Swift,
You have a target you’re trying to reach?

Sgt. Jamie Puttock,
“Well I was hoping to get about three thousand Belize dollars but currently I am looking at fifteen hundred dollars so I am at half of what I was hoping to get.”

And because they are still hoping to reach their target of $3,000 – you can donate to the cause by contacting Sgt. Puttock at 610-0078.
