The analysis of guns and ammunition used in crimes is less than a precise
science here in Belize, but now, a new partnership with the United States Bureau
of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms – known as the ATF - may change that.
Today in Washington DC, the governments of Belize and the United States today
signed an agreement which will allow Belize Police to use the ATF’s gun
tracing facility.
It will help Belize Police to trace the origin and routes of weapons used
in crimes. The initiative is part of what’s called the E-Trace Facility
which the United States is making available to countries in Central America
and the Caribbean. As a follow up, the U.S. will hold a training program for
Central American countries on related law enforcement in July of next year.
