There was a fire scare at the Belize Healthcare Partners Hospital on
Saturday night. At 6:30 all patients and staff were evacuated from the hospital
after smoke began billowing from out of the kitchen. The seven patients inside
at the time were taken to the KHMH. We were there and spoke to the Health Care
Partners’ Manager Rosnell Craig.
Rosnell Craig, Manager
“Our patients were prepared to be evacuated immediately so BERT came
over and the seven patients we had in-house were taken out and by 7:30 or so
they were all prepared to leave. We found out later on that the supposed threat
was coming from the kitchen area. The place was under smoke so we were not able
to say what it was. An initial assessment by the Fire Department is that they
felt like something was burning in the kitchen but when I went back to check
with them later on after they had taken out the smoke, they said that there
was not really a flame, it wasn’t really burning – it was just the
smoke from some flammable item that probably was left in the oven and it burst
I believe and so it was giving out some smoke.”
Keith Swift,
So when will the patients return?
Rosnell Craig,
“The patients will return as soon as we get an all clear from the
Fire Department that definitely they can move in and that the smoke is already
out of the place.”
The patients returned to the hospital on Sunday. There was no structural
damage to the hospital. The smoke by the way came from a frying pan which was
left on a self-cleaning stove.
