On Tuesday evening Kaylene Godfrey won a thousand dollar gift certificate
from Courts Belize Limited in a first of its kind raffle held by the Karl Heusner
Memorial Hospital. It was a raffle in which all parties benefited: the ticket
holder won the prize, but the Salvation Army got the payout as the raffle was
held to raise funds for them. The raffles were sold by the hospital management
and staff and it was a success because while they first thought they would have
only been able to give a thousand dollars, the Salvation Army received an additional
nine hundred dollars. According to KHMH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Gary Longsworth
it was in the spirit of giving this Christmas that they decided to extend a
helping hand.

“This is a first time event for the Karl Heusner. Normally every year
we traditionally help the Salvation Army by going out and assisting with the kettles, this year we decided to try something different and so we decided that
rather than going out and man the kettles we would sponsor a raffle. It was
open to the public but basically it is a hospital raffle so the staff has been
very supportive, many tickets have been bought and we have definitely cleared
expenses.”
Major Errol Robateau, Regional Commander - Salvation Army
“We are appreciative about this and also I would like to take the
opportunity to say thanks to the other business places and to the other individuals
for their support. This year has been very difficult but many of the business
places that have come through for us. Only a few said that they could not donate
but we are hoping that as we rely on our faith to carry us through, we are hoping
that even throughout the year that these business places that they find that
business picks up, that they would remember us because our work continues throughout
the year.”
Major Errol Robateau says that today is the last day for their annual
kettle appeal but they won’t know how much they raised until the money
is counted in January. The fundraising target was thirty thousand dollars.
