But the next pair of young people we’ll tell you about don’t
want to be doctors – though they are choosing a highly specialised field
of study. They are learning about aircraft repair a highly technical and specialized
field and there are only a few Belizeans trained to do it. But pretty soon there
will be more because through Youth for the Future’s Job Placement Unit
– three youths are on the fast track to becoming certified aviation technicians.
The training started on Sunday and for the next 24 weeks – the youths
will be apprentices to Rudy Serano and his team at Premair Aviation Belize.
Youth Minister Marcel Cardona visited today and we used the opportunity to speak
to Rudy Serano Jr. and one of his apprentices.
Rudy Serano Jr., Premair Aviation Belize
“As we do the work here on aircrafts here in Belize we felt that if
we the trained and licensed personnel are doing any work there should be at
all times some Belizeans, even if they are just watching and seeing what we
are doing, getting this experience.”
Rackeisha Smith, Trainee
“We’re training in learning the aircraft engineering and basically
we are doing the technical aspects of the airplane; fixing the engine and maintaining
the technical difficulties that the airplane experiences.”
Rudy Serano Jr.,
“Here in Belize as they’ve done in many other countries like
San Salvador and other countries like that that have significantly developed
aviation businesses, that is how it starts. When the trained people are working
there are always the apprentice who are right beside them doing the work and
they learn the craft and they become proficient and then the licensing follows.”
Rackeisha Smith,
“Well I am always open to learning new things and being that these
guys will take us through it step by step and teaching us what to do- I jumped
on the on the opportunity. It is always great learning new things.”
We should note that the training doesn’t come with a job guarantee.
